The Dublin International Piano Competition was inaugurated in 1988. A triennial event, it was originally sponsored by GPA Group and from 1994 -2009 by AXA Insurance.

Chaired by Irish pianist John O’Conor, and adjudicated by distinguished members of the music profession from around the world, the Competition attracts an enormous entry.

Since its foundation, the Dublin Competition has grown in stature, and now ranks with the most important such international events, not least for its generous €12,000 first prize, but more importantly for the prestigious list of engagements. These include début recitals in London, New York, appearances at international festivals, and concertos with leading orchestras.

The Dublin International Piano Competition is a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions. Previous winners of the Competition are 1988 Philippe Cassard, France, 1991 Pavel Nersessian, Russia, 1994 Davide Franceschetti, Italy, 1997 Max Levinson, USA, 2000 Alexei Nabioulin, Russia, 2003 Antti Siirala, Finland and 2006 Romain Descharmes, France.

The 2009 Competition was won by Alexej Gorlatch from Ukraine.
